Fire-Rated Duct Insulation
Ductwork runs through almost every part of a building, and it passes straight through walls and floors that are meant to hold back fire. Without the right protection, a duct can carry fire, heat and smoke from one area to the next in minutes. That puts lives at risk and can leave your building failing a fire risk assessment.
ICE Thermal fits fire rated ductwork insulation across the UK. We protect ventilation, kitchen extract and smoke extract ducts with tested fire-resistant systems, fitted exactly to the manufacturer's details. Every job starts with a free site survey, so you know what rating each duct needs and how we'll achieve it.

Our fire-rated duct insulation treatment process
Step 1 Contact
To book a free, no-obligation site survey, either give us a call on 0203 376 4802 or email us on enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.
A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your Fire-Rated Duct Insulation needs. It helps if you can tell us which ducts need protection (ventilation, kitchen extract or smoke extract), the fire rating if you know it and whether you have a fire strategy. Photos are useful too, if you have them.
Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost for your Fire-Rated Duct Insulation service. If necessary, our engineers will visit the site to review the current situation, at a time that suits you.
Step 2 Quote
Following all health and safety rules, our engineer will visit your site and carry out a full survey. For your Fire-Rated Duct Insulation service, we'll review the fire strategy, trace each duct route, measure duct sizes and find where ducts pass through fire walls and floors. We'll also check any existing duct wrap against its tested details.
We'll also carry out a risk assessment, so nothing unexpected comes up once work starts. This covers access, working at height, other trades on site and any hazards we find.
Our team will then recommend the best option for your site and answer any questions. You'll receive a free, detailed quote for your Fire-Rated Duct Insulation service, showing the tested system to be used, the fire rating, the ducts covered and how penetrations will be sealed, along with a likely timeframe for the work.
Step 3 Cleaning
Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin the work. Before we start, we'll send you our risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and agree working areas, times and access with you.
Our trained engineers will fit the fire rated system exactly to the manufacturer's tested details, including fixings, joints and supports. Where ducts pass through walls and floors, penetrations are sealed with a compatible tested product. Each stage is photographed, including layers later hidden.
The work will be completed in line with the survey and quote, following all health and safety rules. We keep a safe working area for everyone on site at all times, and can work early, late or at weekends to limit disruption.
When we finish, our team will check the completed work with you and make sure you're happy with the job. We promise to leave your site safe, clean and tidy, with all waste removed.
Step 4 After care
Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every client is happy.
You'll receive a handover pack for your Fire-Rated Duct Insulation service, including product details, test evidence, fire ratings, locations and stage-by-stage photos. Keep it with your building records, as it's useful for audits, insurers and future work.
Our dedicated customer service team will get in touch with every client after the Fire-Rated Duct Insulation service, to make sure all expectations have been met. These records support your fire risk assessment and building safety information.
You'll also be given the opportunity to write a Trustpilot review.

What is fire rated ductwork insulation?
Fire rated ductwork insulation is a specialist wrap or board system that protects a duct during a fire. It's designed to keep the duct standing, stop fire passing through it and limit the heat that reaches the other side. Depending on the job, it helps the duct keep working, such as a smoke extract duct that must keep pulling smoke out while people escape.
Each system is tested to a set time, often 30, 60 or 120 minutes. That rating only counts if the system is fitted the same way it was tested. The right material, thickness, fixings, joints and supports all matter.
Fire rated duct insulation services we offer
- Fire rated wraps for steel ventilation ductwork
- Protection for kitchen extract ducts, which carry grease and a high fire risk
- Smoke extract and smoke control duct protection
- Fire rated boards and enclosures for larger ducts
- Protection where ducts pass through fire walls and floors, sealed with Penetration Sealing
- Fire rated protection for some pipework and cable routes (confirm scope on survey)
- Repair of damaged or incomplete fire rated duct wrap
What's included
- A free site survey of duct routes, sizes and the fire strategy for the building
- A clear schedule of which ducts need protection and to what rating
- Tested fire-resistant systems from recognised manufacturers
- Fitting to the manufacturer's tested details, including fixings and supports
- Correct treatment where ducts pass through walls and floors
- Labels on protected ductwork where required

Key benefits of fire rated duct insulation
- Protects lives. Slows the spread of fire and smoke through the building.
- Keeps escape routes safe. Gives people more time to get out.
- Supports your fire strategy. Keeps fire compartments working as designed.
- Smoke extract keeps working. Protected ducts keep pulling smoke out during a fire.
- Passes inspection. Tested systems with full records stand up to building control, insurers and fire risk assessors.
- Can add thermal insulation too. Many systems also cut heat loss and condensation.
When you need fire rated duct insulation
- A new build or refit where the fire strategy calls for protected ductwork
- Kitchen extract ducts in restaurants, hotels and food courts
- Smoke extract systems in car parks, shopping centres and tall buildings
- A fire risk assessment has flagged unprotected ducts
- Existing duct wrap is damaged, missing or not installed to tested details
- Ducts have been altered and the protection not reinstated

Compliance and paperwork
Fire rated ductwork is a life safety system, so records matter. We fit systems tested to BS EN 1366-1 or the relevant standard for your duct type, in line with Approved Document B of the Building Regulations. You'll get RAMS before work starts. On completion, you get a record pack with product details, test evidence, locations, ratings and photos. This supports your fire risk assessment and your building's safety records.
