Pipework Insulation
Bare or damaged pipework wastes money every hour your system runs. Hot pipes leak heat into plant rooms and ceiling voids. Cold pipes drip with condensation that stains ceilings and damages stock. And hot, exposed pipes can burn anyone who brushes against them.
ICE Thermal fits pipework insulation for commercial and industrial sites across the UK. We insulate heating, hot water, chilled water, steam and process pipework, from a single plant room to a full new-build project. Every job starts with a free site survey, so each pipe gets the right material and the right thickness.

Our pipework insulation treatment process
Step 1 Contact
To book a free, no-obligation site survey, either give us a call on 0203 376 4802 or email us on enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.
A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your Pipework Insulation needs. It helps if you can tell us which systems need insulating (heating, hot water, chilled or steam), roughly how much pipework there is and where it runs. Photos are useful too, if you have them.
Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost for your Pipework Insulation service. If necessary, our engineers will visit the site to review the current situation, at a time that suits you.
Step 2 Quote
Following all health and safety rules, our engineer will visit your site and carry out a full survey. For your Pipework Insulation service, we'll measure pipe sizes and lengths, record the temperature of each service and count every bend, tee, valve and support. We'll also check what insulation is already there and whether any of it is wet or damaged.
We'll also carry out a risk assessment, so nothing unexpected comes up once work starts. This covers access, working at height, other trades on site and any hazards we find.
Our team will then recommend the best option for your site and answer any questions. You'll receive a free, detailed quote for your Pipework Insulation service, showing the material and thickness for each service, the finish, the areas covered and any pipework we've left out and why, along with a likely timeframe for the work.
Step 3 Cleaning
Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin the work. Before we start, we'll send you our risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and agree working areas, times and access with you.
Our engineers will fit insulation to every pipe in the agreed areas, including bends, tees and supports. On cold services, every joint is sealed to keep the vapour barrier whole. Each section is finished with the agreed foil, PVC, glass cloth or metal cladding.
The work will be completed in line with the survey and quote, following all health and safety rules. We keep a safe working area for everyone on site at all times, and can work early, late or at weekends to limit disruption.
When we finish, our team will check the completed work with you and make sure you're happy with the job. We promise to leave your site safe, clean and tidy, with all waste removed.
Step 4 After care
Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every client is happy.
You'll receive a handover pack for your Pipework Insulation service, including the materials used, product data sheets, the thickness fitted to each service and photos of the finished work. Keep it with your building records, as it's useful for audits, insurers and future work.
Our dedicated customer service team will get in touch with every client after the Pipework Insulation service, to make sure all expectations have been met. If you'd like pipe labels added, or valves covered with removable jackets, we can arrange this too.
You'll also be given the opportunity to write a Trustpilot review.

What is pipework insulation?
Pipework insulation is a layer of material fitted around a pipe to slow down how fast heat moves in or out. On a hot pipe, it keeps the heat inside, so your boilers burn less fuel. On a cold pipe, it keeps warm, damp air away from the pipe surface, so condensation can't form.
Most pipe insulation is finished with an outer cover. This might be foil, PVC, glass cloth or metal cladding. The cover protects the insulation from knocks, water and dirt, and leaves a neat finish that is easy to clean.
You may also hear it called pipe lagging. It means the same thing.
Pipework insulation services we offer
Our engineers insulate every common type of building and process pipework:
- Heating pipework, including low, medium and high temperature hot water
- Domestic hot and cold water services
- Chilled water pipework for cooling systems
- Steam and condensate lines
- Process pipework in factories and plants
- External pipework that needs weatherproof cladding
- Pipework in risers, ceiling voids, plant rooms and service tunnels
For cold and refrigerant pipes, see our Chilled, Refrigeration & AC Insulation page. For valves and flanges, see Valve Jackets & Covers.
What's included
- A free site survey, with pipe sizes, lengths and temperatures recorded
- The right insulation material for each service and location
- Thickness worked out to BS 5422 or your project specification
- Insulation of bends, tees, reducers, flanges and pipe supports
- A sealed vapour barrier on all cold and chilled pipes
- A finish to suit the space: foil, PVC, glass cloth or metal cladding
- Pipe identification labels if you need them
- Clean-up and removal of all waste from site
Pipe insulation materials we use
There is no single best pipe insulation. The right choice depends on how hot or cold the pipe runs, where it sits and how much space there is. We mostly use:
- Mineral wool sections. A strong all-rounder for heating and hot water pipes. It also performs well in a fire.
- Phenolic foam. High performance in a slim section, so it suits tight ceiling voids and risers.
- Nitrile rubber. A flexible closed-cell material that is ideal for chilled water and cold pipes.
- PIR foam. Often used on chilled water and larger pipes where a rigid section is needed.
We'll explain the options during the survey and tell you why we recommend each one.
Key benefits of pipework insulation
- Lower energy bills. Less heat lost from pipes means less fuel burned at the boiler.
- No more condensation. Sealed insulation stops cold pipes dripping onto ceilings, equipment and stock.
- Safer surfaces. Insulation keeps pipe surfaces at a safe temperature, which protects staff and the public from burns.
- Stable water temperatures. Hot water stays hot and cold water stays cold, which supports your Legionella control plan.
- Frost protection. Insulated external pipes are far less likely to freeze and split.
- Longer pipe life. Stopping condensation helps protect pipes from corrosion.
- Building Regulations. The right thickness helps new work meet Part L energy rules.
When do you need pipework insulation?
Most sites call us for one of these reasons:
- A new build or refit needs pipework insulated to the M&E specification
- Insulation is missing, crushed, wet or falling off
- Insulation was stripped out for repairs and never put back
- The plant room is hot and energy bills are rising
- Cold pipes are dripping and causing damp or mould
- An energy audit, survey or insurer has flagged bare pipework
If you're not sure what state your insulation is in, a Condition & Heat Loss Survey will show you where the problems are.
